Katherine Casey Spengler, Ph.D. is an education consultant who works with K-12 public school districts. The goal of every professional learning session is to equip educators to provide equity and access to high quality public education by building adult learning communities, strengthening instructional leadership, implementing research-based approaches to teaching reading and writing, and developing effective professional learning communities.
Katherine worked as a senior consultant in the Center for Educational Leadership at the University of Washington for nine years and as instructor in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego for seven years. Prior to becoming a full-time consultant in 2002 , she worked as an elementary teacher and mathematics coach in the New York City Public Schools.
Katherine successfully defended her dissertation, “Struggling Readers and Dyslexic Readers: A Comparative Study of Student Intervention Files” to earn a Ph.D. in Education from the Joint Degree Program at San Diego State University and Claremont Graduate University. The primary focus of Katherine’s current research is the knowledge and skill general education teachers need to efficiently identify and effectively teach students at-risk of reading failure. She holds an Advanced Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from Baruch College, an MA in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a BA from the University of Chicago.
Katherine is the author of Literacy Coaching: The Essentials (2006, Heinemann). She is an invited speaker at national and international conferences, most recently in Lima, Peru.
